Disaster Services Courses

The Disaster Services program is charged with responding to the needs of victims of disasters throughout our service area which includes the Counties of Roanoke, Franklin, Botetourt, Craig, Pittsylvania, Alleghany, Bath and Highland; and the cities and towns therein. In the Roanoke Valley, such disasters include, but are not limited to, single and multiple-family fires, floods, winter storms, and transportation mishaps. You can receive volunteer training to assist us when a local or national disaster occurs.



Bulk Distribution Operations
This instructor-led course is interactive, where participants engage in scenarios to learn how to apply bulk distribution operations guidance. Participants receive the tools and information for use on disaster relief operations, chapter responses and in the classroom.

Client Casework: Provide Emergency Assis
Trains Red Cross caseworkers how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs.

Disaster Assessment Basics
Introduces the critical role of disaster assessment; explore related preparedness tasks, and learn how to collect and communicate disaster assessment information & become familiar with how disaster assessment information supports management and service delivery decisions.

Disaster FrontLine Supervisor/Simulation
DFS prepares supervisors to lead a team of disaster workers to deliver high quality client service and to create a climate that promotes worker satisfaction. DFS/S provides participants an opportunity to practice their supervisory knowledge and skills in leading teams that deliver high quality service and to create a climate that promotes worker satisfaction.

Disaster Instructor Specialty Training
Instructor-led course designed to enhance and refine the presentation skills of instructor candidates for basic level disaster courses. The learning experience consists of brief presentations and interactive discussions focused on the instructional techniques, course structure and delivery methods required to meet the diverse learning needs of participants attending disaster courses. Instructor candidates will enhance their skills through practice teaching in a model classroom environment with feedback and coaching provided by qualified DIST.

Disaster Public Affairs: Local Response
Facilitator-led course that introduces Red Cross communicators to the critical tasks necessary to initiate a chapter disaster public affairs response.

ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll
Provides learners with the opportunity to learn about and use an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and all related equipment. The last part of the class includes being checked-out on an ERV.

Fulfilling Our Mission
Introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community’s actions in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters.

Fundamentals of Disaster Assessment

Fundamentals of Instruction/Facilitation
This is a self-study, basic level course to provide basic information about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed to become a basic instructor in the American Red Cross Disaster Training System. Participants observe a video, which demonstrates about how to represent the American Red Cross, how to apply adult learning principles and instructional strategies required of basic level instructors. Participants work through the materials at their own pace using a self-study workbook and course video. At the conclusion of the training, participants complete a self-administered, multiple choice question course review.

Logistics Simulation
Simulation designed to provide learners with the opportunity to practice using skills and knowledge from Logistics: An Overview. The course also provides students the opportunity to practice skills needed to run a successful logistical operation at the local level.

The course provides participants with a view of the activities performed by the Mass Care group, including the role and various assignments of workers involved in delivering mass care services; also the development of a personal action plan.

Provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve.

Shelter Operations
Provides participants with the knowledge, policies and procedures for setting up, running and closing a Red Cross shelter during a disaster.
