Disaster Services Courses

The Disaster Services program is charged with responding to the needs of victims of disasters throughout our service area which includes the Counties of Roanoke, Franklin, Botetourt, Craig, Pittsylvania, Alleghany, Bath and Highland; and the cities and towns therein. In the Roanoke Valley, such disasters include, but are not limited to, single and multiple-family fires, floods, winter storms, and transportation mishaps. You can receive volunteer training to assist us when a local or national disaster occurs.



Bulk Distribution
The purpose of this interactive course is to prepare participants for the roles, responsibilities and tasks involved in setting up, operating and supporting a Bulk Distribution operation in the chapter and on a disaster relief operation.

Client Casework: Provide Emergency Assis
This course trains Red Cross caseworkers in how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client's immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs.

Disaster Assessment Basics
The purpose of this course is to provide a general overview of the tasks performed by Red Cross Disaster Assessment workers, especially Disaster Action Team members, in support of a disaster relief operation and a local incident such as a single or multi-family fire.

This course prepares participants to drive, utilize and maintain this vehicle in a disaster.

Fulfilling Our Mission
This course is a basic entry-level instructor-led course, which introduces potential disaster volunteers and members of other local agencies to the role of the Red Cross in the community's action in preparing for, responding to and recovering from emergencies and disasters.

Logistics Overview
This course covers basic information on how the function procures vehicles, equipment and supplies, and facilities during a disaster relief operation.

Logistics Simulation
The purpose of the simulation is to provide participants an opportunity to practice the skills and knowledge needed to run a successful logistical operation in their local chapter. Course length: 4 hours

This course is designed to introduce the learners to the activities for the Mass Care group which includes feeding and sheltering.

Psychological First Aid
This course provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and clients they serve. In addition, it provides practical suggestions about what you can say and do as you practice the principles of Psychological First Aid.

Public Affairs in Disaster I
This course will train Red Cross staff to perform the critical tasks that are necessary to ensure that vital relief and recovery information is shared in a timely and accurate manner with both external and internal audiences. Case-based scenarios, group discussions and practice activities require participants to apply their knowledge and skills to the challenging responsibilities chapter Public Affairs workers face during a disaster response.
