NEWS RELEASE Wednesday, July 7, 2010
The Red Cross was alerted by emergency management Tuesday evening of a mobile home fire on Marina Drive in Gretna. Red Cross volunteers met with the family to assess their emergency needs. The family of five – two adults and four children – has received from the Red Cross money for meals, clothing and hotel stays. "It's enough that this family has to cope with the loss of their home and all of their belongings," said Amy Whittaker, public relations director for the Red Cross. “We're here to ease their burdens and provide hope. They have a new friend in Red Cross now." The Red Cross will continue meeting with the family to provide additional avenues of help and referrals.
The Red Cross is the only agency that goes right to the scene of house fires to meet with families. The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies solely upon monetary gifts from the community. To help the families of this and other disasters, monetary contributions may be made to the Red Cross’s local disaster relief fund. They can be mailed to the Danville Office of the American Red Cross at P.O. Box 11057, Danville, VA 24543, or call 540-985-3539.
